I’ve been a manager for over 20 years, but I wasn’t always the leader I am today. In fact, if we go back 25 years, I used to be the boss everyone hated. My employees didn’t respect me, and I felt frustrated and alone. I thought leadership was about giving orders and making sure people followed them. Oh boy, was I wrong.

One day life threw me a curveball—I was fired.

After just six months as a supervisor, I lost the job I had worked five years to earn.

At first, I blamed my employees. It was obviously their fault, right?

But years later, I realized the truth: the few brave enough to give me honest feedback had actually saved my career.

That realization changed everything.

I created a system to get real feedback from my team, and my leadership skills skyrocketed. I never got fired again, and to this day, employees still reach out to me for advice. Imagine that.
